They say the hardest part of any new hobby is getting started
The idea seems to be that if your grandfather didn't teach you, if he didn't take you to the river, teach you how to cast and pass down his favorite rod, you're out of luck.
This is not true!
Let us be your grandfather.

First, you'll need a rod, a reel and a fly line.
A great place to start: the Echo Carbon 9' 5-weight rod. Most people fly fish for trout and this is an excellent starter trout rod. Paired with a Waterworks Lamson Konic 2 reel and the Rio Mainstream (size WF-5F) and you'll be ready to catch your first 'bows. (That's fishing talk for "rainbow trout").
Want something with a little more handling? The Sage Vantage 9' 5-weight rod will do the trick. Coupled with a Galvan Rush R-4 and the same Rio Mainstream line as above and you'll have the perfect trout rod.
Next, you'll need some waders and boots:
Unless you're part seal or enjoy hiking in waterlogged sneakers (we don't recommend it):
Hendrix Walker River waders. They key to waders is breathability - you want to stay warm but you don't want to sweat. Breathability comes from microfibers and doesn't interfere with waterproofness.
Simms Headwaters waders. Nothing keeps you dry like Gore-Tex.
Patagonia Riverwalker boots will help you the most when
you're walking in the middle of the river, or next to the river, or hopping rocks trying to get to the middle of the river without falling in even though you've got great waders on. What's our point? These boots give you great stability.
Simms Headwaters boots pair nicely with the Simms Headwater waders, but you can wear them with anything. These boots feature Simms' proprietary and easy-to-clean StreamTread soles, which are designed to grip the river bottom even in mossy water.
